Desires of the Heart

"Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart." Psalm 37: 4

Quite a promise isn't it? There has to be a catch doesn't there? My heart desires many many things. So how might I by simply delighting in the Lord be given the desires of my heart? Does David mean something other than I am thinking when he speaks of delighting in the Lord?

"And the Lord said to Moses, 'I will do the very thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you and I know you by name.'" Exodus 33: 17

Moses was offered directly an invitation to Psalm 37's promise. What would you ask for in such a situation? What is most important? Is it some material good? Some social status? Power? Money? Sex? Or is it something better?

"Then Moses said, "Now show me Your glory.'" Exodus 33: 18

Wait a minute. How could Moses have received the invitation to have anything given to him and chose simply to see God? What about power over enemies? What about gold and silver? What about all those things that matter so much?

I believe that David meant something different when he said "delight yourself in the Lord" than we would initially think. I believe that David was a man who understood who God is and realized that there isn't anything on earth that could compare to His glory. If we truly delight ourselves in the Lord, the desires of our hearts will not be for money, power, etc but for more of God. And then we will receive our heart's desire: He will fill you up with Himself. Moses had the opportunity to have anything his heart desired. His heart desired more of God. Maybe we should examine our lifestyle and what our desires really are.

Oh Lord, please show me a glimpse of Your glory. Amen.
